A Boy and 2 Puppies - Commission by ronmonroe A Boy and 2 Puppies - Commission by ronmonroe
This was a commission for a friend of the family. The reference photo was only about 4x7, so it was extremely hard to see all the detail I needed, but I did what I could.

Tool: ballpoint pen on smooth bristol

Here are a few wip's:

Working from a small, or faded reference can be a positive element, too, because it forces the mind to invent details and allows for artistic interpretation. You did an amazing job, as always!

Thanks Deacon! It wasn't my mind I was worried about, it was my eyes!

Ahh, of course. Have you tried scanning photos at 600 dpi and then printing them out? The enlargement process might help out a bit with that. The other option, I suppose, would be to not use your eyes. ;)

Thanks Sam. I know it's not my best work. I struggled all the way through this one. I guess that's how commissions go.

Yes, you have the time limits, the client's expectations, the omnipresent risk of making a mistake and having to start all over etc! And the most difficult of all, at least for me, is when the reference photo is out of focus, is too small, or sometimes just a very bad shot in general. Haha
We have to work our magic and make it look better!
